‘Sonians Storm into Presidents Trophy Semi Final

After a frustrating and inactive start to the 2010 Presidents Trophy campaign that saw two walkovers in the 40 over a side competition the Presidents Trophy team, led this year by Captain Ben W Fox, finally saw some on field action when they took on Marchmont at Cavalry Park in a match schedule as a Twenty20.

Keen to keep up the clubs good record in the competition the ‘Sonians side knew that high flying East League Division 2 side Marchmont could pose a threat over the shortened format having themselves impressively reached the semi finals of the Masterton Trophy before bowing out to SNCL Premier leaders Grange.

‘Sonians took to the field first with the new ball given to the seam of Tim Boorman at one end whilst adopting a modern day Twenty20 tactic of spin from the other as Chris Cash took the second over.

Whilst not having the smoothest of starts Tim Boorman managed to pick up 2 wickets with edges through to keeper Breach while Cash produced a controlled spell from the other end. The first change of bowling came in the 8th over with Zan Sevak (2-11) introduced in place of Cash and in tandem with Fraser Sands they worked well to keep the clearly talented batsman Matt Loeffen (16) in check, Loeffen, who has already scored in excess of 1000 runs this season for Marchmont, had threaten to dominate before being removed by Sevak for 16 with a smart caught and bowled.

The introduction of Euan Robertson however proved to be inspired as his spell of 11 balls produced remarkable figures of 3 wickets for 1 run and with Yellowlees taking 2 wickets for 4 runs off his soliatary over Marchmont slipped from 61-3 off 11 to 78 all out with the last 6 wickets lost for just 5 runs.

Pinch hitter Robertson was quickly padded up to join Keith Flannigan in the middle as ‘Sonians looked to chase down the target, some clever running, watchful play and dispatching of the bad ball saw a solid platform laid before Robbo was out for 15 to be replaced by another pinch hitter in Sevak.

Sevak (19*) managed to clear the field on both sides of the wicket, including a well struck maximum off Collier but it was Flannigan whose well paced and boundary strewn innings of 39* ensured Fox’s side ran out winners by 9 wickets with 7 overs to spare.

Thanks to Marchmont for hosting the tie and now on to the Semi Final at Myreside where the club take on either Westquarter or Morton as they look to secure a place in the final for the third time in four years.
