2s Win Top of Table Clash

A late switch of venue saw the table topping 2s fixture changed to Myreside and the side under the guidance of Keith Flannigan for the day responded with a performance worthy of the setting as they took on second placed Edinburgh Accies.

Losing the toss ‘Sonians were inserted on a deck with that had a tinge of green and Flannigan and Cairns strode to the crease and looked comfortable in the opening exchanges before a needless mix up between the pair saw Cairns stranded and run out in the sixth over with 29 runs on the board.

After a dominant looking Flannigan took 15 off Lyell’s second over opening bowler Carmichael (2-30) then struck in successive overs to remove Learmonth leg before and Flannigan (22) who departed with a smart catch at slip.

No.4 Ben Fox was at his watchful best and worked the ball beautifully into the gaps but after Crosby was out for a quick and hard hitting 19 and Vijay became spinner Woodmansey only victim, caught off a combination of bat/helmet, ‘Sonians were rocking at 95-5 shortly before drinks.

It was Yellowlees batting a seven who joined Fox at the crease and started to turn the game back in favour of the hosts. Sparky dispatched the bad balls before Fox departed for a well constructed 38 as ‘Sonians wickets uncharacteristically fell.

At 123-6 and 19 overs still remaining it was a solid performance for a long Myreside batting order that was delivered. Fleming fresh from an unbeaten knock of 39 the previous week kept a cool head and in a fifty run partnership with Yellowlees (56) who hit his first half century of the summer they built a score that started to look defendable. When Yellowlees departed he was quickly followed by Pete ‘Pistols’ Legget in another run out mix up and at 189-8 and six overs remaining Accies sensed they could polish of the tail.

As followers of ‘Sonians 2s this year know though the tail isn’t normally that long and when given a chance it usually wags. With Zan Sevak coming in at 10 a partnership of 34 runs was dominated by the big hitting seamer as he quickly hit 27 runs in 4 and a bit overs before being bowled by Lyell of the penultimate ball of the 49 over. This brought the President to the crease, a man that hadn’t picked up a bat 42 days, who surprised and delighted his team mates by getting on the front foot and depositing the ball to the boundary for a one bounce four before Fleming was caught in the deep in the final over as ‘Sonians built up a par score of 224.

If the Myreside mens lower order was impressive with the bat then it didn’t have a patch on the bowling attack.

Fired up and knowing they had to hit the straps early the pace and swing of Learmonth and Sevak in the opening over was exceptional.

Learmonth (3-11) picking up wickets in his first, second and forth overs bowling both openers and removing the no.4 Cosh LBW while Sevak (1-43) removing Accies Skipper Murden with a smart catch at point from Yellowlees.

However despite teetering on 29-4 Accies Australian pro Raso launched a counter attack and having hit a ton on his only previous visit to Myreside the hosts where well aware he had the ability to turn the game.

Crosby & Vijay though picked up where they left off the week before when they ran through the Grange line up coming on first change. Crosby had Stewart caught behind and ct Sellar from a bat pad before Vijay produced his top spinner with his first delivery to bamboozle Raso before he also deflected a tough caught and bowled chance on to the non strikers stumps to run out Carmichael.

It was the final few overs that were the Crosby show though, and his 4.2 overs included 4 wickets, 2 wides and a chinese cut for 2 as he finished with figures of 4-4 as Accies were dismissed for 72 and the hosts secured a 152 run victory.

‘Sonians remain top and put a slight dent in their nearest challengers but this division is tight this season so Carlton 2’s, Fauldhouse, Accies and Holy Cross all remain very close behind and continuing the momentum is vital if we are to maintain a challenge.

Next week sees the 2s travel to Imans Edinburgh 2s on the same day that Scotland play England, make your choice wisely and early please!
