2s & 3s Lose to Weather Again

Heavy overnight and early morning showers put paid to the 2s and 3s home fixtures on Saturday as waterlogged squares at Myreside and Craiglockhart saw both games fall early victims on Saturday morning.

Rain on Saturday but the 3rd XI Reign on Sunday

Whilst the 1st and 2nd XI were watching the rain fall on Saturday the pitch availability at Newfield had given the 3rd XI the opportunity to wait a day for the sky to clear and a ground to dry as they took on Edinburgh Accies 2nd XI in the league.

3rd XI Finish Game Happy Rather Than Cross

The 3rd XI went in to the match last weekend looking to get back to winning ways after the disappointment of late events the previous week however stand in skipper Ross Brooks got off to a poor start when the opposition captain called the coin correctly and chose to bat.

With opening seamer Bunker still on route to the ground Mark Little shared the new ball with Chris MacFarlane and it was the latter who made the early breakthroughs. Scazna mixed his length and found the glove of the opening batsman to be comfortably caught by under 15 keeper Stoddart before hitting an even shorter length and enticing the number 3 to misjudge a hook and see the ball roll onto his stumps.

In truth the early breakthrough’s took a bit of the energy out of the home side who eased off and despite Paul Bailey picking out square leg after a strong but commentary and sound effect full start to his innings Holy Cross continued to counter attack mainly through their Captain Webb.

Webb patiently waited and gratefully dispatched the bad balls to move to a solid 50 however departed soon after as Fulforth entered the attack.

From a strong position ‘Sonians were able to peg back Holy Cross and continued to pick up wickets at regular intervals with Borthwick removing the last batsman with his second delivery to end the innings on 145.

In any hare and tortoise race Simon Counsell and Alan Borthwick normally assume their roles to perfection however this week Bothy bucked the trend and raced to a boundary strewn 31 with an array of shots either side of the wicket before being bowled whilst Counsell solidly saw through a succession of dots at the other end.

Once Bothy had departed though Counsell’s pedometer started ticking and he became dominant batsman albeit with no consistent support at the other end.

Partners came and went after what looked like a walk in the park at 100 odd for 3. A middle order collapse that included 3 straight ducks had some of the bowlers reaching for their pads however the insurance policy in any lower order in Tim Bunker kept ‘Sonians nerves in check.

At 8 down and 5 needed MacFarlane stuck one up in the air but with the fielding side believing the money was certainly on the ball ‘Sonians had a late escape and Bunker completed the job for a 2 wicket win.

A positive start to the season with 4 wins out of 6 and ‘Sonians will look to push on as they play one of the pacesetters in Edinburgh Accies 2s at Newfield on Sunday.

3rd XI Come Out on Wrong Side of Decisions

The third eleven returned to Craiglockhart for their second home match of the year against Morton (and no, they’re not from Greenock).  Batting first, the 3s tried a new opening partnership with Alan Borthwick and Simon Counsell getting them off to a solid start as they took the shine off the ball and saw off the opening bowlers on their way to scores of 21 and 41 respectively.

Little in Largo Proves the Difference

Watsonians 3rd XI v Largo 2s – 21 May 2011

The third eleven made the trip across the Forth Bridge to Largo with grey clouds gathering and a rain affected match looking to be a strong possibility. The East Neuk didn’t live up to its reputation as a sunny tourist trap this week, but despite a strong breeze off the Firth there were no rain breaks and only very brief periods of drizzle as the 3s managed their second successful raid on Fife this season.
