Wildcats too strong for Penicuik

The Wildcats proved too strong for Penicuik at Kirkhill on Monday evening winning by the comfortable margin of 26 runs with the Wildcats scoring 113 for 7 with Penicuik replying with 87 for 5.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, Penicuik struck quickly when Rory Evans misjudged the length of a ball and was clean bowled for 1 and Kerr Stoddart quickly followed playing across the line of a full toss. At the other end, Andrew Cockburn continued his excellent form, punishing the bad balls for 4 and treating the good balls with great caution. Andrew unfortunately had to retire having scored 33 excellent runs, a very good innings which showed maturity beyond his years

Alex Boyd was caught for 6 and was replaced by Adam Hastings who immediately showed his intent by striking the Penicuik bowler straight back over his head for successive fours. Jamie Cousin was also caught for 6 but Adam continued to score quickly before, he too was caught for a quick fire 18.

To ensure we posted a competitive total we needed a batsman to steady the ship and Kathryn Bryce showed a real understanding of what was required by batting out the rest of the overs for an excellent 18 not out. Finlay Sheach supported well with a hard hit 9 including two fours, taking the Wildcats to a total of 113 for 7 from the allocated 20 overs.

Adam Hastings and Jamie Cousin opened the bowling but one of the Penicuik openers struck the ball savagely scoring two sixes and a four from Jamie’s last over. Jamie had bowled very well but suffered against some very good striking. Murray Blair replaced Jamie and bowled and bowled his two overs for only three runs, a great effort when Penicuik were looking to increase their run rate.

Calum Hilton also managed to restrict the run rate with an accurate spell of 3 overs for 11 runs but once again, the pick of the bowlers was Alex Boyd who broke the Penicuik fight back with an excellent spell of leg-spin bowling which returned figures of 3 overs, 3 wickets for 9 runs. It only remained for Calum Chalmers and Kathryn Bryce to bowl very tidily to wrap up the Penicuik innings at 87 for 5 resulting in a win by 26 runs.

Coaching comment for this week is that every Wildcats batsman (other than Andrew and perhaps Rory) made it easy for the bowlers by getting themselves out with poor shot selection. Your wicket is very precious, don’t give it away easily. Watch Andrew ‘C’ batting, he would bat all day if he didn’t have to retire at 30.

Now on to the Scottish Cup tie with Grange on Friday for those selected – believe we can win the Cup this year.
