Wasps Draw with Edinburgh CC
Tough luck on the Wasps down at Myreside on the big pitch this week as an exciting and tense game of cricket ended in a draw with a highly competitive Edinburgh side.
Captain Calum C won the toss and elected to bat .ECC fielded a mixture of “experience”! and youth and deployed their stronger players to the max as they all bowled their full allocation of four overs, their openers in particular quite pacey and straight. Matty H coped extremely well and never looked in any trouble as he saw off the best of their bowling in putting together an unbeaten 30 , Jamie and Blair were both dismissed by good deliveries both of which barely flicked the off bail as the score ticked along .
David played across one that stayed low and although this umpire will always give the benefit to the batsman , sorry David – LBW on this occasion .
Kathryn came in and looked her usual assured self as she stroked it about to make an unbeaten 33 – well done and all can learn from her awareness of where the gaps are.
The two Calums came together with only 4 overs left and played some great shots to move the scoreboard along as the team ran up a useful total of 131.
Not unsurprisingly , the older lads opened the batting for ECC as well and it was all about containing them and having a crack at the tail. Some advice to the team at this point . I would never advocate appealing everything and anything , however if you really think it’s worth it,appealing is part of the game – MAKE SOME NOISE !
Finlay bowled a beauty first ball that cut back a little and caught their opener cold not really playing a shot – the bastman gets all the doubt but this was plumb. The plea was a bit muted with Calum H the most vociferous.More enthusiasm please !
Thereafter the ECC nos 2 & 3 batted very capably , helped by the odd bit of slack bowling and some fielding that was not quite as sharp as it has been in recent weeks .They both retired at 30 which left us with the tail.
All credit to Captain Calum as he made sure that all the bowlers got to bowl – most important in development cricket .
With 3 overs to go ECC were ahead of the pace and required 16 off 18 .The Wasps switched on at this point and thanks to some great bowling and pumped up fielding , ECC still needed 5 off the last over .Tension crackled as the two young ECC lefties saw them through to tie with a single off the final ball- well done to them as the two lads looked no more than 11 yrs old and they coped very well with the situation .
Pick of the Wasps bowlers this week would be debutante Finlay.Straight bowling with a touch of movement – exactly the sort that pins down batsman and gets wickets .
So a rare result but a fair one and under the rules of this format , it is runs not wickets that count.2pts each and on to the next battle !
