U13 Wildcats tame the Nails

The Watsonian Wildcats defeated Heriots by 7 wickets at Goldenacre on Monday evening to continue their winning run in the Under 13 League A.

On winning the toss, Heriots decided to bat and were put under immediate pressure  by the Wildcats aggressive opening bowling attack of Adam Hastings and Jamie Cousin. Whilst only one wicket was taken, the scoring was restricted and this set the tune for the rest of the innings. James Kidd was introduced to the attack and continued to restrict the scoring with only 5 runs coming from his 4 overs and the added bonus of a wicket.

Alex Boyd was bowling from the other end and with his well controlled leg spin, destroyed the Heriots  batting as they tried to get after him to increase the run rate. In 3 overs, the batsmen managed only two scoring deliveries as Alex produced the superb figures of 3 overs, 3wickets for 5 runs.

Murray Blair took one further wicket as the innings closed after 20 overs with Heriots on 50 for 6.

Andrew Cockburn and Rory Evans opened the batting and produced a quick fire partnership of 26 before Rory was bowled playing across a straight one. Kerr Stoddart continued with the aggressive approach before being bowled round his legs for 10.

Andrew Cockburn almost saw us home with a good innings but played a loose shot to be caught for 22. It just remained for Jack Hewitt and Adam Hastings to take us over the winning line in the 11th over for a comprehensive victory by 7 wickets.

As usual, I like to include a coaching or tactical point in my reports and this week is the same as last week – too many wides. Out of a total of 50 runs scored by Heriots, 11 came from wides plus, of course, any runs scored from the (almost) extra 2 overs we bowled. More control is required, perhaps by not trying to bowl too fast, and the benefits would be easily measured.

Off on our travels again next week, to Grange on Monday for a League match and Gala on Tuesday for the 2nd Round of the Scottish Cup – we got a bye in the 1st Round.
