Happy Monday at Haddington for the Wasps
Great fortitude was shown by both teams on Monday night at dreich Haddington as the Wasps won a competitive match by a bakers dozen.
Some of the small but enthusiastic crowd had been lulled into complacency by the fine weekend weather and were slightly shocked to be greeted by steady rain and a bitter wind – typical Scottish cricket conditions.
Captain Jamie won the toss and elected to bat – which was the cue for the heavens to open. The conditions made beautiful cricket very difficult but the lads stuck to their task with a particularly sensible 29 from Matty providing the spine of the innings as the other batsmen came and went providing useful support. The variable bounce of the artificial wicket made for some nervous batting and fancy footwork was at a premium. Hopefully regular net sessions will encourage the boys to remember that batting is not all about the upper body and that getting into position will lead to improvement.
So between the conditions, the wicket, some tidy Haddington bowling and a full size field which yielded not one boundary all evening (bad luck in particular to Scott H who played the shot of the night only to see it pull up 6 inches short of the rope!),the Wasps amassed 79 runs in their twenty overs.
In came Haddington to bat and they started extremely confidently hitting some good bowling all over the field until Finlay grabbed one to get things rolling . Thereafter some good bowling from all, notably Tom who bowled a couple of accurate overs to take 2 for 5 , Cammy and Matty who bowled aggressively to keep the lid on the scoring and Scott who bamboozled a few with his floaty off spinners. Finally a special mention for Arseniy who came on at a crucial time and bowled his two overs straight and true to stop Haddington from moving the scoring on at the death.
So Haddington ran out of time to make the runs and just to seal the win, a great throw from (I think?) Cammy ran out their final man on the last ball of the match.
Quick handshakes at the end and straight into nice warm cars to defrost – roll on flaming June!

Great game. Yes I confirm it was Cammy J who got the run out. (Even though I couldn’t feel my hands!)
