Wet Saturday & Comeback Sunday
It was a rare sight for 2010 on a Saturday when the rain came down and took away the chance for all three sides to take the field however the 2s did see league action on Sunday.
On Saturday the 2nd XI were the first to fall victim to the weather when the unconvered wicket at Craiglockhart was deemed unfit for play just before lunchtime cancelling the home match against Largo.Less than an hour later the 3rd XI, who were all waiting at Roseburn Park, received a call from the Murrayfield DAFS skipper, who wasn’t at Roseburn Park, confirming the cancellation of the fixture.
The 1st XI however played the waiting game as the light drizzle continued at Myreside. Whilst the Scotland v Ireland game being screened live on the internet from Holland offered the hoards some light entertainment and lessons in how not to lose your wicket the hosts and visitors had to show patience as they watch the weather envelop Myreside in to mid afternoon.
This did give an opportunity for the goals to come out and a Veterans v Youths football match to take place. The veterans taking a 5-3 lead at half time when an early light tea was taken.
Just as the weather looked to have cleared enough for ground preparations to start the rain came down heavier than at any stage in the day and the captains shook on a no result and the football resumed with a mammoth 1 hour and 30 minute second half ahead.
Despite the Veterans steaming in to a 9-4 lead the Youths faught back and the game was poised at 10-10 for about an hour until “experience and mental strength” saw the Veterans through to a 12-10 victory.
Sunday came and the weather had brightened enough to at last allow the football goals to stay away and some real sport to be played as the 2nd XI took to the field to take on the East Academy in the league.
The 2s posted a below par 187-9 off their 50 overs which was indebted to performances from the middle and lower order and then after a lightening start from the Academy led by ‘Sonians very own Paddy Baker the 2s young spin attack of Cash and Boorman led a spirited fightback to inspire the 2s to a 35 run win and consolidate their place at the top of the table. As usual a full match report will appear on the site this week.
