Weekend Summary – 2s the Headline Act

The 2nd XI took centre stage this weekend as they consolidated top spot ahead of the top of the table clash with Edinburgh Accies on Saturday.

The 2s led by Keith Flannigan who in addition to losing opening bowler Zan Sevak to injury late in the week also lost Andy Learmonth late on Friday night to the 1st XI when the Saltires replaced Neil McCallum who had failed a fitness test on Wednesday with Ewan Chalmers a mere 48 hours later.

Batting first against Grange 2nd XI the 2s were indebted to a power display of hitting from Peter Legget fresh from his successful involvement in the recent European Under 19 Cricket World Cup Qualifiers who hit 76 as they racked up a par score 244-8. In response the 2s at times struggled to hit the right areas and with Grange batsman Douglas Phillp having hit 298 runs in his past 2 league games they were up against it for large periods of the afternoon. However at times of crisis, enter Euan Robertson who took 4-12 to seal a victory by 24 runs, Raj Routray also weighed in with 3-33.

The 1st XI came up short by 33 runs as they travelled to current champions Aberdeenshire. Batting first Aberdeenshire set ‘Sonians 262 for victory and despite a second century of the season for Tim Weston and good contributions from James Easton and Stuart Chalmers no other batsman was able to hit double figures as they fell to their fourth loss of the season.

The 3rd XI went down to their first loss since June when they travelled to Loretto to take on Musselburgh 2s with only 10 men due to the knock on late selection issues from the Friday evening. Batting second the 3s faced the prospect of scoring 229 runs for victory after Musselburgh had reached 228 with the returning Colin ‘Coco’ Siller taking 2-9. After stalling initially the 3s put up a respectable chase with skipper Ollie Gaywood hitting 46 and Mike Cousin unbeaten on 60, the 3rds eventually coming up 63 runs short.
