Cairns & Crosby Capture Records

George Cairns and Richard Crosby helped smash a couple of club records on Saturday.

How it would of looked on a proper scoreboard

First they broke the record partnership for any wicket when they passed the mark set in 1996 of 259, and by the time Crosby was out from the penultimate ball of the innings their partnership stood at a staggering 290 runs. 4 further runs were added off the final ball (which included a no ball) as the 2nd XI finished their 50 overs on a club record and a mammoth score of 383-3.

Commenting on the feat club stalwart Alan Borthwick said “George Cairns 161 not out may be our third top amateur score in our history, beaten only by Ian Torrens 207 not out (v Heriot’s) and JH Purves who scored 169 not out in a big partnership with James D Martin against East Lancashire in 1929. Richard Crosby’s 159 could therefore be next in line. James D Martin, the father of a man well known to all the current ‘Sonians first teamers, John Martin, scored 15 centuries for Watsonians”

Indeed Alan appears correct with FJC Moffat the next highest amateur scorer recorded with 153 not out in 1930.

The partnership of 290 beat that of the the previous mark of a 259 unbeaten partnership between Herzberg (142*) and Fowler (109*) in 1996 against Glasgow Accies, a game in which current ‘Sonians club vice captain Euan Stubbs played for the opposition.

Following the weekends success our planned date for launching the start of our ’club records’ page on the website will be brought forward, watch this space.

Thanks also go to former club secretary Stewart Oliver for keeping and collating the club records to allow us to launch our club records pages soon.

As we work through the records though we do realise we have some gaps, do you have an old WCC scorebook in a cupboard somewhere? Please let Ross Brooks (see contacts page) know if you do.
