B’s follow A’s as 13s Squad Make Double Winning Start

Fresh on the heels of the A’s Team victory on Tuesday the Under 13 B Team headed to Inverleith to take on SMRH.

Keith Stoddart rounds up the action for watsoniancricket.co.uk/

SMRH v Watsonian u 13 B , Inverleith , Wed 28 April

A first class start to the season by the boys down at breezy Inverleith as they got their league campaign off at a good lick against a useful SMRH side .The artificial wicket down there can make life difficult for any cricketer due to the erratic bounce.

WCC batted first and patiently made their score against some good, straight bowling by SMRH .

Alex and Calum got the innings off to a steady start taking runs off the more wayward deliveries before Calum C mistimed one to point . Alex then got his head down and played a very mature innings to keep the score ticking along as Calum Hilton and James provide useful support at the other end. Some lovely stroke play took Alex to 19 before he was caught just as the maximum 30 came into view .

Jamie and Matthew came in and dinked the bowling around to put together a very useful partnership.Jamie, in particular, displayed some excellent legside technique in his 11 runs including a few that were collected just inside the unusually long boundaries .Matty also played some cracking shots and neither looked in any trouble until each of them got fooled by balls that stayed low .

Scott and Calum Harris then saw the boys through to a total of 64 which looked reasonable given the conditions .

SMRH took to the field and it was clear that their opener knew what he was doing as he caressed some good bowling around for 12 before he was delivered a jaffa by David who took the plaudits for best bowler on the night with figures of 3 for 4.

A special word at this point for some brilliant fielding by all the boys , with an exceptional throw by Jamie R running out the SM no 4 being a highlight .

Some great bowling from 100mph Matty, steady James, consistent Calum and spin wizard Alex ticked off the batsman one by one until SMRH were standing at 35 for 7 and the boys were on easy street .

At this point in came the SM no.9 who was evidently their best batsman. It was curious that he was so far down the order and he quickly knocked up 15 runs which meant the game was very evenly poised with plenty of overs left for SM to make the total .

However some very competitive bowling and intelligent fielding by the entire team in a tense situation meant that the last three wickets were taken leaving SM 4 short of our total on 60 all out with the demon McLean taking the final wicket .

All in all very satisfying and I hope the boys are looking forward to the rest of the season with every confidence – they should be!
