Annual WCC Golf Day Report
A report from Mike Legget on the return of the excellent Annual WCC Golf Day which was held in the beautiful surroundings of Gifford Golf Club this weekend.
With the sun Gods shining down on us giving perfect golfing conditions, Sonians invaded Gifford Golf Club in force to show off their golfing prowess. The stakes were high, the pressure was on, all the secret practicing was over, it was all about who could hold their nerve in battle.
The 1st tee shot provided both the ugly and the sublime. With the pressure of a large crowd watching Michael Bunker stepped up to the plate and struck a perfect shot which homed in on the pin beautifully. With the bar now set there was much hype about our club golf pro Robbo who in his own words ‘plays better after a heavy night out on the town’. However from night of sleep deprivation he proceeded to slice his 1st tee shot at a 45o angle onto the wrong green, to the amusement and relief of those waiting to play next (pressure was now off)!
There were a number of competitions running during the round with two closest to the pins on holes 1 and 14 which were won by Graham Dykes (guest) and Ryan Flannigan respectably. The longest drive competitions were won by Mike Legget (hole no.8) and by Ross Paxton (hole no. 18) who hit an enormous drive that despite everyone’s best efforts was still a good 20 yards ahead of his nearest competitor.
The standards of golf were high (as you would expect from a Sonians player) with some impressive scores coming in and it was tight for 3rd position with Tim Bunker and Mike Legget both scoring 39 points however with a count back it was Keith Flannigan who hasn’t played golf for several years, who dusted the cob webs off his clubs to score an impressive 39 points to finish in 3rd position. Despite his awful start Robbo never put another foot wrong and went from strength to strength showing how good a golfer he really is with a score of 41 points to finish in second position. However is was a local lad with all the course secrets from years of hacking Gifford Golf course up, who has now finally reached his golfing peak at a ripe old age of 59 (who says it’s too late) Robert Legget who took 1st prize with a score of 43 points.
It was a fantastic day and one that will hopefully become an annual fixture in our club calendar. I would like to thank you all for making it such a enjoyable day which also successfully raised £400 for the club
