WCC’s T20 Campaign Off to a Flyer

It was cold and dark on Tuesday night, but what else would a cricketer expect for the first round of the Murgitroyd Masterton Trophy.

David Ross won the toss for Corstorphine and elected to bat, perhaps a wise decision with only 6 players at the ground in time for the start.

Watsonians started well, with Stuart Chalmers picking up Sean Olivier and Ross in quick succession, before Arun Jay was stumped by Euan Stubbs off the bowling of Paxton. This brought Tim Hancock to the crease to join South African amateur Biddulph (30). Hancock proceeded to make a hard hitting 51, favouring the legside, before being forced to retire hurt after top edging an attempted sweep into his cheek off Rajeev Routray’s medium pace. This injury stalled Corstorphine’s progress and their innings concluded on 145 in the gathering dark.

The pick of the Watsonians attack was Stuart Chalmers who picked up 3-17 from his 4 overs.

Stubbs and Flannigan opened the batting for Watsonians and it immediately seemed that the Corstorphine total would be too light. The pair put on 72 in the first 7 overs before Stubbs fell to Olivier. Flannigan was next to go, bowled by former Kelso team mate Craig Adams for an aggressive 44 from 27 balls.

James Easton and Chalmers picked up where the openers and almost carried Watsonians over the line before both feel to consecutive Biddulph deliveries with only 16 required. Despite some nervy moment and a seeming obsession with attempting (and failing) to carve boundaries through the off side, Andy Learmonth and George Cairns were able to steer the ‘Sonian ship home with four balls to spare when Learmonth hammered a four through the covers off Olivier.
