Sultan of Swing Sees ‘Sonians Winning Run Continue
It was the returning captain Steve Paige who stole the show for Watsonians on Saturday as reigning SNCL Champions Aberdeenshire were welcomed to Myreside.
Having won their previous two games ‘Sonians went in to the fixture feeling confident and sitting a respectable forth in the Premier League table.
It was seamers Mike Legget and Paddy Sadler who set the stage for Paige sharing three wickets with the new ball denting Aberdeenshire after a relatively positive start with the bat.
Then, Enter the Skipper.
The clouds gathered and the ball began to swing as Paige ripped the heart out of the Aberdeenshire line up with the sultan of swing taking 6-20 from 6.2 overs.
Thanks to excellent bowling coupled with some smart work in the slip cordon and from keeper Stubbs the champions Aberdeenshire were in ‘dire straits’ and bundled out for 90 in under 30 overs without a ball of spin being bowled.
In reply, despite losing wickets at annoyingly regular intervals, Watsonians were always in control and with the help of some wayward bowling, the target was reached 4 down before the tea interval and before a hint of the rain that was to follow. Birthday boy Timmy Weston (23no) and Craig Wright at the crease when the win was secured.
Another win which pushes ‘Sonians second behind leaders Grange who faltered for the first time this season whilst on the road to Clydesdale. With Carlton level of points albeit with a slightly inferior net run rate this Saturday’s fixture at Grange Loan takes on extra importance for both sides. Still there is certainly room for improvement though and ‘Sonians know that they need to continue to look to push and challenge themselves on the field and cutting out some of the extras that were offered to the visitors on Saturday is just the start.
