‘Sonians Beat Rain & Greenock to move 4th

Despite the weather’s best efforts, Watsonians ran out comfortable winners in their rain-reduced fixture against Greenock.

A heavy shower around 11am had left the outfield saturated, and persistent drizzle threatened to prevent a game of any shape taking place. However, after an early tea and several trips on an off with the covers, a 25 over-a-side commenced at 16.40.

Stand-in skipper Tim Weston lost the toss and the visiting Watsonians were inserted with the outfield still decidedly squelchy. James Easton set out to bully the Glenpark attack, and quickly sent the ball to the boundary before falling to a sharp piece of keeping by Andy Hislop. Ryan Flannigan continued his mid-week Scotland Lions form, smashing 39. He was however guilty of failing to capitalise on the life granted to him a long-on holing out to the same position in the same over. Flannigan’s wicket brought Ewan Chalmers to the crease and together with Weston, they began a savage onslaught against Greenock’s bowlers. Chalmers was the dominant partner, hammering 77 from just 47 balls, with Weston crafting 69 from 55. Despite the fall of three wickets at the end of the innings, the Watsonian batsman managed to post the daunting total of 215-5.

215 always seemed a stiff target and so it proved. Mike Legget, backing up his excellent opening spell from last weekend took 4-22 from his 5 overs, putting pay to any chance Greenock had of a successful chase. Kevin MacLaren offered some resistance and struck the ball cleanly against the spinners but when he fell to Craig Wright amidst a chorus of jeers and heckles from the home balcony, the game really was over and Paddy Sadler and Stuart Chalmers were left the simple task of mopping up the tail.

The win lifts Watsonians to 4th in the league, boasting the same win:loss ratio as third place Carlton. Greenock’s troubles continue, still winless and rooted to the bottom of the table.
