1s Defeat Uddy

The 1st XI travelled to Uddingston for their second game of the season looking for their first competitive.

With Bothwell Castle Policies in its usual exemplary condition thanks to the work of Paul Hoffmann, Steve Paige won the toss and elected to bat first. Openers Flannigan and Easton set the tone for the innings, Flannigan looking in particularly good touch before falling caught behind to an excellent piece of seam bowling by Hoffmann. Easton continued his impressive form fromlast weekend, making a beligerent 47 from 53 balls before Gavin Bradley trapped him LBW. The middle order all contributed (Weston 22, E Chalmers 35 and S Chalmers 44) but the key innings was Craig Wright’s 44 from 39 balls which propelled Watsonians to a total of 237 for 7 at the end of their 50 overs.

Despite early breakthroughs by skipper Paige, accounting for Allan MacLeod and Uddingston professional Ras Priyadarshana, the Watsonian fielders once again failed to hold their catches, dropping Paul Hoffmann twice behind the wicket on his way to a particularly destructive 61. However, when Rajeev Routray accounted for Hoffmann with a perfectly executed yorker it looked like a decisive blow had been struck.

Despite Stuart Chalmers ripping out the Uddingston middle order with 3 quick scalps the game was still just about in the balance with Uddingston requiring 6 an over with David Bill and Josh Johnstone looking well set. However, some miserly bowling by Ross Paxton (2-28 from 10 overs) and the introduction of Craig Wright (2-13 from 3.3 overs) saw Uddingston come up well short, all out for 166 in the 43rd over. Watsonians earning their first win of the season, at the second time of asking.
